Read MoreRoyalty or not, children have rules. Rules at home. Rules at school. But royal children, well, the experience of being a royal child takes rule-keeping to a whole different level.
According to the Daily Express, royal etiquette dominates almost every aspect of Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis' lives. According to the paper, the three Cambridges have strict etiquette lessons, and according to etiquette expert Micah Meyer of Beaumont Etiquette, the royal children undergo rigorous training in preparation for major events such as the Platinum Jubilee and other appearances. She said.
"Royal etiquette training begins as soon as they are old enough to sit at the table. They grow up eating formal meals, going to formal functions, and practicing everything from the pitch of their voice to proper attire and, of course, how to bow."
George and Charlotte were among the children who attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's royal wedding in May 2018 (Louis, of course, was absent from this wedding, as he was not even a month old at the time.) ITV news anchor, Tom Bradby's wife, jewelry designer Claudia Bradby, attended the royal wedding and told ITV, "They were very well practiced. They really seemed to be enjoying themselves. One little girl was upset but was comforted by the promise of Peppa Pig and Smarties later". (Hey, TV and candy are great motivators for this 30-something writer, too.)
Fast forward to March of this year, George and Charlotte, along with their parents, Prince William and Kate Middleton, attended the memorial service for their great-grandfather, Prince Philip. At one point, Kate said to Charlotte, "Shhh."
"I think what's important is that Kate took the time to not just correct, but to be mindful, such as telling Charlotte to be quiet with "shhh" at that key moment," parenting expert and founder of Raising Remarkable Teenagers, Angela Karanja, parenting expert and founder of Raising Remarkable Teenagers, said. There were several moments of connection throughout the event, especially at the beginning." For example, when the young daughter seemed nervous, the mother leaned over and whispered something that clearly cheered her daughter up. This is a powerful and positive parenting skill that I often encourage parents to use. Also, we never see Kate scolding Charlotte angrily. She scolds as matter-of-factly, quickly, and without wrapping up the facts as best she can in that public place."
Kate in particular is a perfect example of what etiquette expert Patti Ehsay calls "true etiquette.
"She has stepped into such a role, and yet she is still herself, not a robot or a Stepford wife. She speaks her mind eloquently." She is within the confines of royalty, but she doesn't allow others to constrain her. It's a really tricky balance, but I think she manages it beautifully."
